Images of Calbost

We are delighted to present a few images of the village of Calbost, together with a photo of the Pairc War Memorial at Kershader and of the former Marvig school. These were taken in September 2003 and may be freely used, on a non-commercial basis, subject to full attribution.

	Pairc War Memorial This fine Memorial to the men and women of the Pairc who lost their lives in war was erected in recent years and stands in Kershader.

	Pairc road sign This sign is found shortly after the turn off at Ballallan and consititutes an official recognition of the Pairc district, so named because in the 19th cnetury it was transformed, by the clearance of most of its residents, into a sporting estate or "Deer Park". 26 villages were cleared in the southern Park, mostly along the side of Loch Seaforth and Loch Shell, and only the villages of Lemreway and Orinsay have been re-settled.

	Looking across Loch Dubh Taken on the same day, this rather dark view of Calbost is taken from a stance beside the Mission House. It gives a rather sombre view of one of the most attractive, if not THE most attractive, villages in Lewis.
	Planisker School Now a family home, this is the former school Planisker School at Marvig. Calbost children walked, barefoot in summer, across the hills to this school which closed in 1974.
